Description

Students read excerpts from President Hoover's 1928 Rugged Individualism speech and demonstrate their comprehension of the text by completing 4 tasks and answering 26 questions. The tasks and questions are a combination of academic, creative, and opinion. This would be great for a sub and the answers are included where appropriate.

Sample questions include:
--What, according to Hoover, sets America apart from the international community?
--Why was that change acceptable, or justifiable?
--Describe the impact, per Hoover, of the Republican’s return to power on the American people.
--Re-write Hoover’s explanation of liberalism in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Under what circumstances does Hoover support the government being involved in public works?
--How does Hoover emphasize that the American system is the best system?
--For all the successes Hoover lists, where has America fallen short? How might the acknowledgement of that have impacted his speech and intentions?
--Should this speech be referred to as the Rugged Individualism speech, why or why not? If not, what would you rename this speech?
