Synonyms - Same Meaning - Snap! Card Game, 90 cards to play with

Synonym Snap!

We developed this game of Snap! for our children to play against one another using 45 different pairs of synonyms to develop their vocabulary. We found that whilst our children developed a good vocabulary, they would often choose the same words over and over again in their writing. We wanted to encourage them to develop their language repertoire.

This game encourages just that. By playing the game, the children are continuously looking at the words, and learning which words link with other words of the same meaning.

The game is simple. Purchase, download, print, laminate and cut up the 90 word cards and sort into the two coloured piles. One pile is made up of yellow word cards and the second pile is made up of green cards which are synonyms of the yellow cards. At the point of download, all cards are with their partners - hence providing an answer key.

As the children lay down their cards one at a time, one after each other, they must watch to see if the yellow word card matches the synonym on the green card. The first person to spot the match shouts "Snap!" and wins the cards. The winning player is the first person to win all of the cards.

Our children love this game, and it has enabled them to develop their knowledge of synonyms and apply them to their writing choices. If you are in a UK school this has also supported preparation for the SPAG assessment in Y6.
