Description

Students will read and analyze different points of view on the annexation of Hawaii with this primary source analysis stations activity (it can also be used as a pairs packet, jigsaw, gallery walk, and more). There are 8 text sources, 7 political cartoons, and 48 questions to answer.

The answers are included where appropriate so this would be great with a sub! This also has a teacher information page with 7 ideas for implementation.

Sample questions include:
--Under what circumstances could Hawaii become governed as a British colony?
--How would American choices affect international relations in the region?
--Was this political cartoon published before or after annexation and how do you know?
--Summarize the main point (and identify the relevance of) Foster’s second paragraph.
--Citing evidence from the text, does Cleveland support or oppose the annexation of Hawaii?
--What does Mahan see as a key reason for America to gain Hawaii?
--On what grounds does the Committee ask the US to reconsider?
--Can one of these 3 political cartoons be considered most accurate compared to the historical record, why or why not?
--If you could only use 3 of these sources to teach someone about the different views on Hawaii's annexation, which ones would you use and why?
