Description

Narrated by David McCulloch -- and featuring the voices of Sam Waterston, Morgan Freeman, Julie Harris, Laurence Fishburne, and George Plimpton -- Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War is the definitive guide to this pivotal time in American history.

This nine-part series begins with the appalling conditions of life under slavery and addresses the burning questions of Union versus states' rights. Exuberant with the first shots fired at Fort Sumter, soldiers on both sides quickly realize at First Bull Run that the conflict will be protracted and bloody and are "never more scared" than at Shiloh. After elevating the war to a "higher cause" by pledging to emancipate slaves, President Lincoln faces opposition from Copperheads determined to force an immediate end to the conflict. Following the enormous Union victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, Lincoln helps to dedicate a new cemetery and puts into words the lasting implications of the war. By 1864, Lincoln's chances for re-election appear dim -- until William Tecumseh Sherman captures Atlanta and marches his army through Georgia to the sea. In his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln encourages Americans to avoid placing blame for the war and to focus instead on rebuilding the nation, a dream that dies one month later at the hands of John Wilkes Booth. As the war draws to a close, Americans are left to struggle with what the war means for the country's future.
