After elevating the war to a "higher cause" by pledging to emancipate slaves, President Lincoln faces opposition from Copperheads determined to force an immediate end to the conflict. Following the enormous Union victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, Lincoln helps to dedicate a new cemetery and puts into words the lasting implications of the war. By 1864, Lincoln's chances for re-election appear dim -- until William Tecumseh Sherman captures Atlanta and marches his army through Georgia to the sea. In his Second Inaugural Address, Lincoln encourages Americans to avoid placing blame for the war and to focus instead on rebuilding the nation, a dream that dies one month later at the hands of John Wilkes Booth. As the war draws to a close, Americans are left to struggle with what the war means for the country's future.
