Description
This documentary on the Crusades is an excellent resource for both understanding the history behind these holy wars and for examining the current atmosphere of mistrust between Christians and Muslims.
Starting in the late 11th Century, when Pope Urban II dispatched a huge force to reclaim Jerusalem, which had been under Muslim control for some 400 years. For the knights and others who made the journey, it was both a spiritual quest and an escape from Europe's petty wars and famines; what transpired, however, was far different - and all carried out in the name of doing God's work.
The guide consists of 27 questions to help students remain engaged during the video. The guide is divided into sections and generally takes 3 class periods to complete.
An answer key is included.
Although the overall video chronicles the first three Crusades, I have chosen to focus on the First Crusade, called by Pope Urban II and led by Duke Godfrey of Buillon.
