Description

Students will analyze Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier by reading excerpts of Justice White’s majority opinion and excerpts of Justice Brennan’s dissenting opinion. They will define 7 vocabulary terms and answer 18 questions of varying degrees of difficulty. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Citing evidence from the text, does White believe students automatically have blanket immunity under the 1st Amendment?
--What issue had to be addressed before a decision could be made?
--Give two real world examples that would support White’s 4th paragraph.
--Under what circumstances would the 1st Amendment have been on the side of the students?
--Summarize the main point of Justice Brennan’s 2nd paragraph.
--Why don’t you think this was a unanimous decision (whether for or against the students)?
