Description

Students will read and analyze excerpts from Chief Justice Warren's majority opinion on Loving v. Virginia and from Justice Stewart's concurring opinion regarding interracial marriage and the 14th Amendment by answering 20 questions and one comprehension task of varying degrees of difficulty. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Why were the Lovings convicted even though they got married in Washington, D.C. where interracial marriage was allowed?
--Explain Virginia’s defense regarding why the Equal Protection Clause had not been violated.
--Re-write the 6th paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Identify the main point of the paragraph beginning with, “we have rejected the proposition.”
--Provide a synonym, or definition, for odious.
--Summarize the opposite sides during Reconstruction regarding the letter and spirit of the law. How are they relevant to this case?
--Explain the meaning of the phrase, “on so unsupportable a basis as racial classification.”
--Which part of the concurring opinion adds the most substance to the majority opinion and why?
