Description

Students will read and analyze excerpts from Chief Justice Burger's opinion on Wisconsin v. Yoder and from Justice Douglas' dissent in part regarding compulsory education by answering 30 questions of varying degrees of difficulty. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--What is another word for “compulsory?”
--Which aspects of the 1st and 14th Amendments were used in Yoder/Miller/Yutzy’s defense?
--Re-write the 4th paragraph in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Could those two approaches have coexisted in another circumstance, why or why not?
--Which part of the Constitution is most connected to, “the power of a state…to impose reasonable regulations for basic education.” Write an example of why basic education would be imposed.
--According to Burger, does compulsory education override any other need or consideration in society, why or why not?
--Explain the meaning of the phrase, “the loss of Amish adherents by attrition.”
--On what grounds does Douglas partially dissent?
--Why is the distinction between education and conventional formal education significant in this case?
