Description

This full-page worksheet reinforces the stresses that act upon the earth’s crust and the faults and the deformations that result. I created it for my middle school earth science class. There are four sections.
  • In the first section, students write the geologic term that is opposite in meaning, in orientation, or in association to the provided term or phrase in the table. I provided a word bank for the first section.
  • In the second section, students circle the pair of terms in each row of terms that are most closely related.
  • In the third section, there are ten rows of four vocabulary terms. Three of the terms in each row share a theme. Students are to circle the odd term out. Then students are to write a logical sentence below each row of terms on the line that accurately describes the relationship of the theme, using the terms in the row above.
  • In the fourth and final section, students identify and write whether the geologic stress scenario is a precursor to a fault or fold. This document is editable. A two-sided, one full page answer key is provided with the answers in colored font.
Vocabulary terms covered include normal fault, reverse fault, thrust fault, lateral (strike-slip) fault, compression, tension, shearing, fold, anticline, syncline, dome, basin, deformation, mantle, crust, core, plateau, isostasy, stress, fault, fault-block mountains, hanging wall, foot wall, transform boundary, convergent boundary, divergent boundary, fracture, and rift valley.

This PDF document will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word using an Adobe Acrobat DC Reader app. It includes a two-page key with the answers in red font.
