Description

Build college and career readiness with this no prep school counseling HBCU Black History resource designed for students in grades 5-8 to research Historically Black Colleges and Universities. For the younger grades, you might need to read aloud the comprehension text and assist with the extension activities, but children in grades 6-8 can usually do much of the work independently if necessary.

School counselors and teachers can easily use the text as a springboard for college and career readiness discussions, then facilitate a research activity for students using the internet, and the college and university websites.
  • Each page asks students to find the following information:
•Location
•Private or Public
•Number of Students
•Mascot
•Current President
•Year Founded
•School Motto
•Notable alumni
•Interesting facts
•How far away the college or university is from the student’s home.
•Popular majors
•Finally, students will rate their interest in the school on a 3-point scale.

*A cover page is included if teachers wish to have students create a binder or notebook collection of multiple school research projects.

This resource is a great way to introduce HBCU’s as a college option. It gives children a very basic baseline of knowledge about Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A great stand-alone resource, it can also be a nice compliment to your other college and career readiness plans.
