Description

“I really like your units. They are detailed and allows for critical thinking on the part of the students. Thank you!”

This 20 day complete unit bundle examines the founding and early history of all 13 English North American colonies and New France, up to and including the French and Indian War, with an eye towards these colonies’ relations with and impact on the different Native American tribes on the Eastern seaboard. It also provides students with practice in the art of highlighting and note-taking expository text.

This bundle includes: a 4-9 day Jamestown mini-unit (total time depending on whether or not you have students do the Pocahontas/John Smith essay project included in the mini-unit); a 2 day Pilgrims mini-unit; and a complete 14 day 13 colonies unit.

This is a “warts and all” examination of this period of history, as it pulls no punches telling the true human story of the struggles and triumphs of the early colonies, as well as a detailed examination of the interaction between the colonists and the local Indian peoples.

This unit is based upon and complements my textbook “We Take Nothing by Conquest” and is designed for both the novice and experienced classroom teacher as it contains everything needed for the full course. All of the materials have been battle-tested in the crucible of my own 8th grade classroom.

The Jamestown mini-unit materials include:

* 18 pages of informative and interesting text (the chapters “Brave New World," "Did Pocahontas Save John Smith," "Jamestown Survives," and "Offending the Naturals" from my textbook “We Take Nothing by Conquest”);

* an inquiry based study guide for each chapter to focus students on the main points and supporting details;

* one PowerPoint for each chapter with answers to the study guides for review, and including pictures and maps to stimulate discussion and enhance understanding;

* a 27 page Teacher’s Guide which provides day-by-day and step-by-step instructions how to use all of the materials;

* a Cloze activity for one of the chapters;

* a fun and educational board game for one of the chapters;

*an essay writing project about the Pocahontas/Smith "rescue" complete with instructions, outline, and sample paragraphs;

* a PowerPoint Quiz Show review game; and

* a unit test.

The Pilgrims min-unit materials include:

* 5 pages of informative and interesting text (the chapter “The Pilgrims” from my textbook “We Take Nothing by Conquest”)

* an inquiry based study guide for the chapter to focus students on the main points and supporting details;

* a 25 slide PowerPoint with answers to the study guide for review, and including pictures and maps to stimulate discussion and enhance understanding;

* a 10 page Teacher’s Guide which provides day-by-day and step-by-step instructions how to use all of the materials;

* a Mayflower Compact primary source document translation activity; and

* a 10 multiple choice question unit quiz to assess student learning.

The 13 colonies materials include:

*a 54 page Teacher’s Guide which provides day-by-day and step-by-step instructions how to teach the unit and use all of the materials;

*42 pages of informative and interesting text, divided into eight chapters (the complete second unit of the textbook);

*an inquiry based study guide for each chapter to focus students on the main points and supporting details;

*quizzes for each chapter;

*PowerPoints with answers to the study guides for review, and including pictures and maps to stimulate discussion and enhance understanding;

*a Cloze activity for one of the chapters;

*a strategy game activity for one chapter concerning Native American and Colonist interactions;

*a PowerPoint Quiz Show review game;

*a 13 colonies map project, complete with instructions and a sample map;

Answer keys and grading guides for all study guides, activities, quizzes, and projects are included in the Teacher’s Guides. Materials are provided as word documents and PDFs in one zip file.
