Prefix / Affix Snap!

We developed this game of Snap! for our children to play against one another using the main prefixes/affixes they would need for their writing and spelling knowledge. We found that our children needed some form of "fun" activity to challenge them into learning the meanings which link with the prefixes and, as a result, learn more about the language they are using. This game includes 32 prefixes and their meanings.

This game encourages just that. By playing the game, the children are continuously looking at the prefixes and linking them to their meanings - and vice versa.

The game is simple. Purchase, download, print, laminate and cut up the 128 word cards and sort into the two coloured piles. One pile is made up of prefix/affix cards (yellow), the second pile is made up of their meanings (green).

As the children lay down their cards one at a time, one after each other, they must watch to see if the yellow prefix card matches the meaning on the green classification card. The first person to spot the match shouts "Snap!" and wins the cards. The winning player is the first person to win all of the cards. As the game continues, the cards will start to get muddled and the game becomes more and more complex - ensuring the children have to really focus on the cards and the categories. We have included two of each cards to really get the children watching for the pairs coming up!

Our children love this game, and it has enabled them to embed the knowledge of prefixes/affixes as well as support their understanding of words within spellings and writing. If you are in a UK school, this has also supported preparation for the SPAG assessment in Y6.
