Stock Market Crash & Causes of the Great Depression | VIDEO LESSON

This is the first episode of the Great Depression & New Deal series focused on the Stock Market Crash. This episode teaches the story behind the stock market crash, what happened that day, how it impacted the traders and investors, and why it happened. But the story-lecture also unpacks the larger context that explains the other underlining factors that led to the Great Depression after the stock market collapsed.

The resources include interactive notesheets that has students engage with an anchor image, make a prediction on the exploration question, record and react to notes (definitions shown in the video to help visual learners), a cause/effect chart, and then revisit their hypothesis to analyze the exploration question. Then there is a quick quiz to ensure understanding. That should take about 30 minutes and then there is an extension lesson of 4 engaging stations on the causes of the Great Depression. Students visit (virtually or in the classroom) and learn more about the stock market crash, bank failures/runs, farmers recession, and the Federal Reserve Monetary policy. There are graphs, photos, cartoons, and a short text for each one for students to analyze and fill out their question sheets- organized for each station.
