Description

We wanted our children to learn lots of different materials within the groups of solids, liquids and gases as part of our materials study unit. Therefore we developed this Odd One Out challenge.

This product includes 1 game, with 20 playing cards (and two spare cards for teachers to add their own vocabulary too) which can be printed off and/or projected onto the classroom whiteboard as the files are PDF.

A student answer sheet and teacher answer key is included.

A visual answer key is also provided to make assessment even faster!

Each card focuses on one set of words (each card is numbered from 1 - 22).

The Game

Four materials are included on each card, three of the materials belong to the same group, one does not! The children must correctly identify which material does not belong with the other three and explain why. There is a structured framework for a student's response on each card to support their justification by comparing the two sets of words on each card. The older the students, the more information they can give within their answers, for example, list the features of the material to justify why the material chosen is the odd one out.

A worksheet is provided for the children to record the answers to all questions on a sheet of paper. It provides another use for the activity and greater independence for the children to complete and check their answers.

A full answer key is also given to support the teacher in two formats - a second set of cards which have the Odd One Out circled, and an answer sheet with all the correct letters of the Odd Ones Out listed.

This activity can be used in a variety of classroom and home situations:

  • Science Centers
  • Home learning activities
  • Review of learning
  • Introducing new language
  • Class challenges
  • Team Games
  • Flashcards
  • Paired activity challenge.

Our children loved this game! Whilst we printed the product out and used it in a Science center - we also projected the cards onto our class whiteboards for the children to use it as a whole class activity.

Thank you for visiting our store and viewing our products.

Best wishes
