Description

Students read a brief background on the causes of the Spanish-American War and a short primary source on McKinley's decision to have Congress declare war on Spain in 1898. They answer 12 questions and analyze 11 images (prompts are provided). The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Explain what yellow journalism is and provide 2 examples from the Spanish-American War time frame. Do we see the same concept in today's media? Why/how or why not? If we do, provide an example.
--From whom do we get this account and can it be considered reliable, why or why not?
--Using prior knowledge, explain what the "a lot of trouble" was that McKinley referred to "some months later" when he visited with Kohlsaat again.
--Do you think it mattered then, or today, that McKinley did not know where the Philippines were located? Why or why not?
--Identify where in the passage McKinley appears most human and where he appears most Presidential.
