Description
This is a three day lesson where my high school student's evaluate the role of children's storybooks for the purpose of socialization. This lesson works great for my socialization unit in my sociology unit. There is a handout attached to analyze the message for each day of the project. It was designed in word and can be modified for your classroom. This is truly one of our favorite lessons all year!
Before Lesson: I check out elementary books from the local library or have students bring their favorite childhood book.
Day 1: In high school class, they read their books to themselves and answer the socialization prompt questions. They also write three questions they could ask an elementary student about their book.
Day 2: We then bring our books to a local elementary school and read the books to an elementary class. The high school kids then ask them socialization questions to see if the books intended socialization message was conveyed. If time allows they color a picture from the story with the high school kids. I have my students complete a post evaluation after reading to the kids for homework before day 3.
Day 3: We then meet to discuss the purpose of reading children stories and discuss the experience.
