Impromptu Speech Topics in a Jar as a Public Speech Practice Game

Hey teachers everywhere! Mr. Hauger here with a great idea for classroom interactions with your students. Today I want to show you how to make 1-minute improvisational speeches your favorite new classroom game. I call them snap speeches, and ask my students to snap if they agree or appreciate the effort made by the speaker. Students will gain a lot from this impromptu speech practice and will enjoy doing it. 

Speeches can be fun, fictional, or nonfiction. Print and cut a list of your favorite journal or speech prompts and put them into a glass jar, or any container you have in the room. Choose a student at random, or take volunteers and have them draw a topic and speak for one minute. If the class appreciates the speech, they snap, and if the majority of students snap, the speaker has been successful. You can modify this public speech activity in many ways, but its a winner in my classroom, and I thought you might appreciate the idea!

Some impromptu speech topics might be:
-Advertising should be allowed but restricted to children of a certain age. 
-Junk food should be illegal
-Homework should be abolished
-My best day ever would be...
-My favorite school memory is...
Or make your own based on your studies of conversations in class.
