Nature Weather Indicator Forecast Activity

Several proverbs predict upcoming weather events and seasons from nature’s cues. The characters in the two short passages in this lesson witness a combined twenty-two signs from nature and their environment that rainfall, possibly in the form of a storm, is imminent. How many of nature's warnings of impending rain can your students identify from reading the passages? After underlining the signs of rain in the text, your students will paraphrase the signs of approaching precipitation in a follow-up listing.

While there are exceptions to the rule, the old-time forecast sayings that often appear in the Farmer's Almanac are accurate and useful tools everyday people use to predict weather fronts, patterns, and seasons. Students taking environmental science, field ecology, or any nature 101 courses will benefit the most from learning during this lesson.
