Challenge your students to learn about the history of the first English settlement in the New World, Roanoke Colony and the mystery behind the disappearance of the colonists.
This lesson is introduced as students’ analyze artifacts from an evidence bag. As each artifact is revealed students will attempt to determine the relevance to an event in American History. Students will then read about the history of the first English settlement and discuss the circumstances around the founding of this colony. Next, pairs will learn about the theories surrounding the disappearance of the Roanoke colonists. The class will create a human bar graph as they debate which of the theories is most credible. After this debate, students will write a narrative that explains what they feel happened to the colonists.
