"My Math Tessellation" | A Back to School, Get to Know You Activity
What does your math tessellation say about you? This fun, back to school activity is the perfect ice breaker for your first day of math class! Suitable for upper elementary, middle school, and even high school! Students will answer a series of questions and decorate their hexagon based on their responses. The questions are designed for you to get to know each student’s learning style, classroom and feedback preferences, and individual strengths/limitations. The artwork will also help you get to know your student’s personal likes and interests! Best of all, you can decorate your bulletin board or classroom door with the finished tessellation.

Back to School Activities for Middle School Math Class - First Week of School
A collection of 8 math activities for the first days of school that combines math with "all about me" information. This is a great resource to jump into math while engaging in unique challenges - your students will love that these activities are "something different" than the typical icebreakers! Back To School Math Poster Activity - "Math and Me"
This "Math & Me" poster activity for the first days of school combines math with "all about me" information. Ratios, number skills and coordinates are used and made relevant to their own lives. Appropriate for 5th grade - 8th grade!
The "My Name in Ratios" section will have students using ratios and proportions in a way that is directly related to them.
The "Initials on the Coordinate Plane" will have students plotting the initials of their first and last names on a coordinate grid. This exercise enhances their understanding of the coordinate plane and spatial awareness, all while reinforcing the recognition and structure of letters.
The "Birthday Numerology" section will have students calculating their age in years, months, and days as well as finding the sum of the digits in their birthdate. Students will also apply multiplication and fractions to their daily lives.
This is an excellent ice-breaker for the start of the school year for both elementary school and middle school!
