Description

Students will get an overview of, or review, various people and events from the abolitionist movement. They will be read a snippet about 14 abolitionists, see a selection of various organizations and publications associated with the efforts to abolish slavery, and they will read a one page overview each of the efforts and challenges to slavery's abolition. They will match 9 individuals to their identification, answer 5 multiple choice quotation questions, and respond to 5 discussion questions.

Next, students will read 15 quotes from 1786-1852 (some anti-slavery and some pro-slavery) and they will answer 21 questions. Students will then compare and contrast the abolition movement from before and after 1840. They will next analyze 9 images by answering 4 questions, and lastly students will complete a 7 task map activity showing the progression of slavery’s abolition in the United States. The answers are included and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--What type of emancipation is George Washington advocating? Why do you think that was the case?
--Explain the significance of the reference to Bunker Hill.
--Does this excerpt point to McDuffie being an abolitionist or not? Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.
--Explain what Douglass sees as effects of the United States still having slavery.
--Rewrite Remond’s quote in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Which other excerpt would Hammond have most agreed with and why?
