Analyzing Ashoka’s Edicts – Activity
The main goal of this lesson is to have students analyze Ashoka’s edicts and determine what he and his empire were like:

Activity:
There are 3 different activity options based on a 570-word resource that divides Ashoka’s edicts into 10 different sections.
Note: Edicts have been re-worded and re-numbered for clarity to make the activities easier for students. For example, Edict XIII is a source used for Edicts 1, 2, and 3 (this will be indicated at the bottom of each edict)
Activity Option 1: Which Edicts Is It -Worksheet?
6 Descriptions are provided. Using these descriptions, students…
1) Read the descriptions and find the edict(s) that best meet each description
2) Next, students provide a brief explanation of why
(note that for many, more than one edict can be used)
Two versions are included. One gives students 5 edict options for each section. The other is open-ended and has students choose whichever edict they think is best.
Activity Option 2:Question Worksheet
Students answer the comprehension and analysis questions on the worksheet by examining Ashoka’s Edicts
Activity Option 3: Analyzing Ashoka’s Edicts Chart
Students choose 5 edicts, analyze them, and explain what they show about both the Mauryan Empire and Ashoka
