Description

Do your human anatomy and physiology students need help identifying, classifying, and stating the functions of macromolecules? Are the dizzying numbers of vital proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids getting the best of them? If the answer is yes to either question, then this activity is for them! This two-page lesson offers four tables for student completion.

  • The first table features twenty-four molecular names. Students classify the macromolecule as a lipid, a carbohydrate, or as a protein. Students color-dot all of the carbohydrates blue. Then students sub-classify the sugar as a monosaccharide, disaccharide, or as a polysaccharide. Students then color-dot all of the proteins that have the ending "-in" red.
  • In the second table, students write out the function of DNA, mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA.
  • The third table honors critical lipids. Here, students write out the function of vitamin D, bile salts, triglycerides, phospholipids, cholesterol, and testosterone/estrogen/progesterone with the assistance of a word bank of functions.
  • In the fourth table, students practice their understanding of proteins by writing out the function of enzymes, antibodies, plasma proteins, structural proteins, hemoglobin, and peptide hormones.

I included a complete key with the answers in colored font.
