Description

This biography focuses on Harriet Beecher Stowe, an abolitionist and author whose novel Uncle Tom's Cabin showed Northerners the brutal realities of slavery in America during the mid-1800s. While Stowe's book converted few Northerners to the cause of immediate abolition, it did encourage many to adopt a position against the expansion of slavery. Southerners, meanwhile, criticized the book as a series of falsehoods and denounced Stowe as both arrogant and out-of-touch.

The biography includes a series of questions based on the reading.

In using this in my own classroom, students are encouraged to:

1. Number the paragraphs

2. Read the biography

3. Highlight answers in the reading

4. Use complete sentences

The answer key demonstrates these steps.

For those seeking distance learning options, the biography can easily be converted to a digital activity using Google Slides.

You can also purchase the biography as part of a general series I have posted on Amped Up Learning: Biographies in American History.
