Challenge your students to decipher the meaning of the Gettysburg Address and determine if Lincoln’s speech has meaning for America today. The lesson begins with the class solving an inquiry riddle to lead the students to this speech. Next, the class will read a brief history of the Battle of Gettysburg and the formation of the Gettysburg Cemetery. Pairs will then close read through the Gettysburg Address, defining new words, deciphering the wording of the speech and drawing conclusions about the purpose. Finally, students will create an illustrated version of the Gettysburg Address.
