Description
Give your students the chance to tell their parents they averted two nuclear wars before lunchtime with Cold War Commander! An original Mano Koa Enterprises Table Top Strategy Game and Mini-Unit. In this game, players/students form teams that advise Cold War Era Presidents from Truman to Reagan to evaluate actual solutions for the following issues.
-
The Korean War (including Gen. MacArthur's nuke plan)
-
Guatemala and Jacobo Arbenz
-
Bay of Pigs Invasion
-
Cuban Missile Crisis
-
The Space Race
-
Vietnam
-
China
-
The SALT Treaties
-
Iran-Contra Affair
-
Soviet-Afghan War.
Each of these missions starts with a detailed briefing on each Cold War era crisis and a brief outline of actual solutions proposed to American Presidents. Students then pick a solution and defend their reasoning. Points then are awarded or deducted from their score depending on the outcome. When the mission is over, students are given a briefing of what actually happened. While students are debriefed on the actual outcome of each crisis, they may find that their solutions have created totally different realities from our own. Over the course of the game, a team may successfully liberate North Korea, prevent Cuba from becoming communist and establish colonies on both the Moon AND Mars. Another team, might choose to be KGB agents and cause communism to spread across every corner of the globe by sabotaging American efforts. Finally, another team's solutions may extinguish humanity five times: seven times due to nuclear war and once due a biological arms race.
Oh, about that. Since this is the Cold War, eight of the ten missions have the potential to end in full scale apocalyptic confrontations. When that happens, the world starts over and the team earns a Doomsday point. This game contains the following materials:
-
A 170 slide PowerPoint outlining each of the ten missions equipped with suspenseful animations to make the game more exciting.
-
A Strategy Guide allowing students to gather the details of each mission, the pros/cons of each solution, the outcome to their solution and the actual outcome to the event.
-
Samples of the game.
-
A Rule Book including four different styles of play.
