ELA HOMOPHONE BUNDLE: 3 Activities - Flashcards, Snap Card Game, Teaching definitions

This bundle includes three products to support the teaching and embedding the learning of homophones with students from grades 2 - 5. We have included:

PowerPoint Vocabulary and Definition Teaching Resource

This product focuses on the meanings of homophones. Using a PowerPoint presentation of 31 slides, we have used 52 words, each covering 24 homophone word sets of two and three words and placed the definitions of the words onto the slides. Students have to link the word to their meaning - either as a whole class, group, or individual activity. Following each slide, an answer key reveals whether the students were correct or not.

Included in the resource:

• PowerPoint activity which can be edited to further add other homophones or mix the slides up to use again and again until the knowledge has been mastered
• PDF for ease of download and ability to print too.

As a PowerPoint, this enables the teacher to print certain slides, move the slides around, target specific pairs/triads of words which are challenging students, and also, edit the resource to add their own homophone which have not been included on this presentation.

This resources supported our students to learn the vocabulary, the meaning of the words and how the words are spelt differently. It has also supported a widening of vocabulary within language and writing too.

Flashcards: 138 words in 65 pairs/triads of homophones

We developed this product to embed the learning of homophones with our students and used it in many ways.

The product includes 138 within 65 word sets of pairs and triads of words, e.g, by, buy, bye, four, fore, for etc.

Each word is on its' own card and there are two spare cards should the class teacher wish to create even more flashcards.

We used this activity in different ways:

1) Speed reading words and new vocabulary (cash/cache) which the students had not heard of before.

2) Display - placing the new words and their homophones, as well as those words which were proving problematic to spell (there, their and they're) on display as a reminder of the differences between the spellings

3) Definitions game: Showing the students the key word and asking them for a definition - extending their vocabulary through explanation and encouraging them to use new words in context.

4) Display - placing the words around the room and asking the student to name the word or words which match the homophone - and go and find it.

5) Pairs game - hand out homophone pairs to different students - students to go and find their partner.

6) Spellings - test students on their spellings of homophones, students can also test one another

There are many activities that can be developed with these handy flashcards, and we think that we have covered the vast array of homophones you will need - however, with the handy spare cards we have included, you can always add more!

Snap! Homophone Card Game for 2 Players:

This product takes 73 pairs (or sets of the three) words with the same sound, but different spelling - homophones - and turns each into a game card. With 146 games cards, students can learn through playing the game of snap the different spellings and meanings of 146 homophone words.

The resource includes:

• Instructions to prepare and play the game
• 146 game cards in color
• 146 game cards in black and white

The game has been designed for Snap - but, once purchased you can use as many other activities:

• Speed reading
• Fishes - Identify the pairs/triad homophone which goes with the word
• Sorting activity
• Matching activity
• Give the word - children define the meaning
• Offer the definition of the card in your hand and the children must guess the word
• Spelling challenges - match the spelling of the word to the card in hand
