Description
This St. Patrick's Day digital escape room presents students with 5 classic brain teasers and on-line hints to help solve them. Escape rooms allow for learning at its best; the engagement and excitement of solving problems while trying to beat the clock make learning an adventure. Digital escape rooms do NOT need any of the set up or materials but are just as much fun. There is no real preparation on the teacher's part and no papers to run off. They present students with a fun, authentic reason to do close reading, since clues often need to be read multiple times to be successful.
After being captured by a leprechaun, the students’ mission is to solve his 5 riddles in order to be set free. As the timer counts down (suggested time is 45 minutes), participants in this St. Patrick's Day Escape Room will encounter Google Earth pages of 3 major rivers; short videos of the 7 Dwarves, the 7 continents, how to draw Mickey Mouse, and how M & Ms are made; photos and information about the 7 Wonders of the Natural World, the McDonalds Golden Arches logo, and Elizabeth Blackwell; and a chronological list of presidents. Links to these resources are hidden in pictures for students to discover. Each clue is written in rhyme to add to the enjoyment and to give the sense of a true treasure hunt.
This escape room was created in Google Sites. Students can work in pairs or small groups to solve the puzzles. (Note: Each group will need a desktop computer, Chromebook, ipad, or other device that can access the Internet. Some of the links require access to YouTube and Google Earth, so please be sure your device can access these before purchasing.) The link to the escape room site can be assigned in Google Classroom, emailed, copied and pasted, or typed in. A QR code is also included for easy scanning. Answers to each riddle are typed into a Google Form, which tells them immediately if their answer is correct so they can move on to the next challenge.
This PDF includes:
· the link and a QR code for the Escape Room
· instructions/suggestions for use
· solutions for the challenges, including location of the hidden links in each photo
· 4 congratulatory signs that can be printed if you want students who successfully escape to hold them and pose for “victory photos.”
