Description
I penned this minerals classification activity for my middle school earth science class. This full-page review contains five sections.
-
In the first section, students are presented with twenty-one listed properties. Students circle only the properties that accurately describe a mineral.
-
The second section is matching for the following test names used to identify minerals: luster, shape, color, streak, cleavage, fracture, hardness, density, and special properties.
-
The third section has three short answer questions - two that probe why certain substances aren’t classified as minerals and the third why the color is not always a reliable physical test.
-
In the fourth section, students classify whether the seventeen properties listed describe a metal or a nonmetal.
-
In the fifth section, students circle which of the paired substances is the originating one, and then they explain the relationship between the two terms on the set of provided lines. For example, students circle magma in its pairing with minerals and are likely to write that magma cools to form minerals.
I provided a complete key with the answers in colored font.
