Grade 5 "Picture It" Numerical Representations & Relationships Vocabulary

These math vocabulary words focus primarily on place value relationships and number representations-whole numbers, place value, decimals and fractions.  I truly believe that this student-centered product is a very effective approach to help students build their capacity in using mathematical language to thoroughly understand math concepts.  This product is standards-based by grade level strand (and previous grade level) that consists of printable vocabulary cards requiring very little prep time AND are self-checking!  Simply print them on cardstock, fold them in half, and store them in a storage bag, along with the student directions and vocabulary list.  That's it! One side of the folded card is "the picture" or visual image, and on the other side is the correct description/explanation of the picture and the correct math vocabulary word.  

These cards are different than regular vocabulary cards you have probably seen before, in that students start with "the picture" first, and then describe what they see using mathematical language and the math vocabulary word.  Students then flip the card over to self-check for the correct description and math vocabulary word(s).  This approach to practicing math vocabulary  is based on my years of experience as a math specialist, working with students in the classroom, and best practices research.  Since this product can be used in multiple ways such as whole group, small group, math centers, tutoring groups, and independently, you are not limited to just one way.  There is also an animated PowerPoint designed for whole group instruction/distance learning that is available to purchase as a separate product.  

Students need time to deepen their understanding of math vocabulary and concepts over time, and this is one way for students to do this. Plus, this product helps to fill in gaps, provide recursive review, preview upcoming math vocabulary, AND also helps to maintain mathematical language throughout the year!
