Description
Students will learn about, or review, the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War 2 (WWII, WW2) with this webquest. They will visit 4 websites, watch one TedTalk, and answer 28 questions. An abbreviated list of the Bill of Rights is included to help students with some of the questions and there are 3 additional websites at the end for more information. The answers are included where appropriate.
Sample questions include:
--What was the goal of Public Proclamation No. 4?
--Explain how, or why, Executive Order 9066 and the internment camps were inherently racist.
--Despite certain objections to the roundups, why was Japanese internment followed through on?
--On what grounds did Justice Murphy from the Supreme Court disagree with Japanese relocation and internment?
--Explain the challenges the Takeis faced when the war ended and they returned to Lost Angeles.
--Summarize George Takei’s father’s connections between American democracy and having been sent to internment camps for the duration of WW2.
--“You fought not only the enemy, but prejudice, and you won.” What did Truman mean by that statement? How did the 442nd expand what it means to be an American?
--Why is George Takei proud to be an American and why does he love the country that once betrayed him?
The websites are archives.gov, trumanlibrary.gov, lowellmilkencenter.org, and history.com. The TedTalk is from George Takei and is about 10 minutes long.
