Description

This product introduces students to the concept of fractions - taking a whole and splitting the whole into halves, quarters, eighths, twelfths, equivalency, improper and mixed numbers.

We have taken the learning right back to think about what children need to know when working with fractions. This is a hands on resources which turns the abstract concept of fractions into a concrete experience, providing students with resources to be able to see how shapes can be split into halves, quarters, eighths and twelfths.

This resource includes all you need to introduce, explore and embed learning in fractions of halves, quarters, eighths and twelfths, including equivalency:

  • Fraction mats
  • Double sided color cards (and grey scale version to save printing costs)
  • Instructions
  • 3 Activity sheets to explore the concrete concept of fractions
  • 3 Worksheets to explore the abstract concept of fractions (with the ability for students to still use fraction mats and cards

Students use fraction mats and double sided colored cards to be able to make various fractions within the mats. As a result, students can make:

  • halves of shapes
  • quarters and three quarters of shapes
  • one eighth, seven eighths, equivalency of halves and quarters in eighths
  • twelfths - formed in two different mats to show how shapes can differ and like eighths, can find fractions of twelfths, equivalency of quarters, halves, three quarters and so on.

The fraction mats each have their own activity sheet for the teacher to work through with the students, including instructions to the students, key questions and key learning outcomes. There is also flexibility for teachers to add in their own questions using the mats and cards to ensure that their students really understand fractions as part of one.

Following on from the concrete learning activity, we have included three worksheets which encourages students to develop more abstract thinking related to fractions. They can use their knowledge of fractions to help answer the questions, and continue to be supported by the fraction mats and cards to help find the answers if they feel the need.

By the end of the resources, students will understand fractions of given shapes, including halves, quarters, eighths and twelfths. They will also understand equivalency in fractions and be introduces to mixed numbers and improper fractions.

We think this resource is perfect to introduce students to the concept of fractions using concrete experiences to support abstract thinking.

Best wishes
