Mathemagicians - Whole School Challenge to Improving Mental Maths Skills (A Spelling Bee for Mental Maths!)

Welcome to Mathemagicians!

This is a one stop shop for everything you need to raise attainment, progress and expectation in Mental Maths across the whole school from K - 5th Grade (US)/Y1 - Y6 (UK). This resource was devised by us to do exactly that in our own school - and it worked. We have now put all of the resources together in one place for you to achieve the same incredible transformation in your own school.

We love Spelling Bee at our school, but we wanted to develop a resource that would provide the same level of challenge and excitement in Mental Arithmetic that Spelling Bee does or our students and their families learning spellings. We couldn't find a resource that would do this - so we made our own across the whole school. We engaged with all teachers and support staff, parents and our children - the outcome saw a dramatic increase in the Mental Arithmetic standards across the school. This is why we wanted to share Mathemagicians on TPT. If you need to raise expectations and skills in Mental Arithmetic, this resource is for you.

When you purchase this resource, you will download a zip file of a number of different resources to help you to develop your students' knowledge of mental arithmetic. All are presented to a high standard, but all can be edited by you, if you need to, to make it match the needs of your school. However, there is no need to do this - we have designed every item to enable all of our teachers to just "pick, lift and use". You will receive the following items:

• How to...Guide (11 pages) which provides the detailed guidance need to launch, deliver and embed Mathemagicians across the school. It also includes a week by week guide for what should be done to experience success with the scheme across the school from setting up, to hosting a parent meeting, to the end of term Mathemagician Final and celebration of learning. Full instructions on how to use each resource is included along with how to stage the end of term/semester Mathemagicians Final.
• Teacher and Parent Booklet (16 pages) which supports teachers plan for and deliver age appropriate mental maths skills linked with the curriculum outcomes. It includes a whole school overview of what is taught and when it is taught for subject leaders to monitor teaching and learning. It also supports parents to work with their children at home through providing examples of learning objectives in real life contexts.
• Teacher Question and Answer sheets (11 pages) for K - 5th Grade (US)/Y1 - Y6 (UK) with variation in wording to ensure that children learn to apply the language of maths within the main operations.
• Children's Answer Sheets (5 pages) structured to support students in recording the correct responses to ensure that the assessment process is measuring an understanding in Mental Arithmetic, rather than a reading assessment.
• Assessment Sheet (1 page) provides a structured approach to measuring the starting point of all children, their progress throughout the school year, and opportunities for the teacher to record what the next steps in learning are and what is working well.
• Achievement Certificates (2 pages) for termly Mathemagicians winners and the Greatest Improvers for those children who have made the greatest progress from the starting point of the assessment period.
• Five PowerPoint Presentations for Grade 1 (Y2), Grade 2 (Y3), Grade 3 (Y4), Grade 4 (Y5) and Grade 5 (Y6) with approximately 50 slides per presentation to support the celebratory, end of term/semester challenge final.
