Description

Multiplication and Division contains seven lessons created to align with the multiplication and division unit in the new Alberta Grade 5 curriculum. Each lesson begins with instructions and examples to introduce new concepts. After that, the teacher does a few practice questions with the class. At this point, students are ready to do questions on their own. Each lesson ends with an optional challenge question. Answer keys are included.

This resource also includes two PowerPoint mini lessons, “Divisibility Rules” and “Factors” to introduce concepts to students. In addition, there are two digital math games, which can be used as warm up activities or for review.

Problem solving is also incorporated into this unit with the inclusion of three digital problems related to the unit. Project these for your students and allow a few minutes for them to try to solve the problem on their own. Then work through an additional slide for each problem that explains in an interactive step-by-step process some strategies that could be used to find a solution.

A quiz is included at the end of the unit.

The standards included are:

Knowledge:

  • A divisibility test can be used to determine factors of a natural number.
  • Division by zero is not possible.

Understanding:

  • A number is divisible by another number if it can be divided with a remainder of 0.
  • Standard algorithms are efficient procedures for multiplication and division.

Skills and Procedures:

  • Investigate divisibility by natural numbers to 10, including 0.
  • Generalize divisibility tests for 2, 3, and 5.
  • Determine factors of natural numbers using divisibility tests.
  • Explain the standard algorithms for multiplication and division of natural numbers.
  • Multiply up to 3-digit by 2-digit natural numbers using standard algorithms.
