Description
What is population density? What physical and human factor influences population density and sparsity? Why do some areas have a large number of people living in one are while in another place there are very few? Explore how various factors influence population trends and present them through population pyramids.
OBJECTIVE:
o The learner will identify how human and physical factors influence population distribution.
o The learner will create and understand the purpose of a population pyramid.
o Students will understand the difference between population distribution and population density
o Students will learn how to calculate population density.
MATERIALS:
o Reading Activity (Included-3 Pages)
o Laminated What Influences Population Distribution Game (Included - 2 Pages)
o Create a Population Pyramid Option #1 (Included)
o Create a Population Pyramid Option #2 (Included)
o Create a Population Pyramid Template
o Ipads or computers for those who wish to choose their own data to create a population pyramid.
o Ziplock Bags for Game Pieces
o Colored pencils, crayons, markers & ruler. (Per Group)
o Exit Card & Rubric (Included)
o Tape the 4 “Location Photos,” One in Each Corner.
PREPARATION:
o Fully read over the lesson and instructions. Understand the content so, as the instructor, you can help direct and guide students’ where they need assistance and have questions.
o Laminate the What Influences Population Distribution Game and any other materials you would like to reuse in the future
o Print off the following: 3-Page Reading Activity, Population Pyramid Option #1, Population Pyramid Option #2 and Population Pyramid Template (One per group). Staple into a packet.
o Cut out the game pieces for each group, laminate them, and place them in Ziplock bags. Also, laminate the game card.
o Prepare and charge Ipads and/or make computers available for those who wish to gather population distribution information from Census.com and StatisticsTimes.com.
o Print off Exit Cards and Population Pyramid Presentation Grading Rubric.
