Description

How will the gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy of an object change as it moves up and down? How is energy transformed in a system? Engage your students in hands-on learning with our NGSS-aligned lab worksheet and investigation activities utilizing the PhET simulation Energy Skate Park
Standards Addressed
  • MS-PS 3-2 Develop a model to describe that when the arrangement of objects interacting at a distance changes, different amounts of potential energy are stored in the system
  • MS-PS 3-5 Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object
Activity Overview
  1. Observing Changes in GPE and KE Students use the simulation to explore changes in gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy as the skating moves up and down the ramps. Students then describe how to maximize the potential energy of the skater in this system
  2. Observing Conservation of Energy. Students use the simulation to collect evidence to support or reject the claim “Friction is the transfer of kinetic energy from an object to another object or surface."
  3. Extension: Calculation of GPE
