Description
Students will read and analyze excerpts from Ulysses S. Grant's first Inaugural Address by answering 21 questions. They will also complete an extension task and analyze 2 political cartoons. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Write a contextually appropriate synonym, or definition, for “untrammeled.”
--Under what circumstances would Grant exercise his veto power?
--Identify the relationship Grant hoped to have between himself/the office and laws.
--How does Grant advise the government and Americans to approach the next four years and why?
--Why does Grant single out the country’s “young men” for maintaining America’s honor?
--If this speech had a “hook,” what would it be and why?
--If you were a reporter in 1869, what are 3 questions you would have asked Grant after hearing this address?
