Description
Presidents since George Washington have sworn their oath of office on the Bible. Washington's precedent led the way for almost all U.S. Presidents to promise to uphold the Constitution while placing their hand on the Holy Bible.
Students will read a brief passage about taking the oath of office during the Presidential inauguration and the role the Bible has played since Washington's time.
They will exam several verses chosen by Presidents and why they chose them. Then, they will look up the most popular verses chosen by Presidents and write them in their own words. They will have to think critically as they exam why the Presidents may have chosen those particular verses.
This is a fun activity that could be used by upper elementary or middle schoolers. It is a great activity for President's Day and fits in nicely with an election year. It could be used any time in a history class.
