Richard Nixon (1913-1994) was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. On August 9, 1974, facing an impeachment trial that he was likely to lose for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress following the Watergate Scandal investigations, Nixon became the first president to resign from office. In this speech, delivered to the American public on August 8, Nixon explains why he chose to resign before Congress could finish its impeachment trial.
