This activity includes 19 "ROCK MATS". Students complete the following tasks about their assigned rock(s) through research (all DIGITAL and set for Google Classroom):

Rock classification (type)
Mineral(s) in the rock
Rock properties
Uses for the rock
Examples of other rocks in the same classification

Once students are done, they write a mini report on their rocks.

While this activity supports research skills, it also offers a special opportunity for students to communicate their findings about their rock. This is great for an ELD activity because students get to practice the language of the discipline, meaningful interactions with their peers, and be supported with their ROCK MATS to guide their presentation! As with most teacher resources, you can make this resource your own and find different ways to incorporate it into your Unit on Rock, Rock Cycle, etc..

This activity is also appropriate for DISTANCE LEARNING!
