Sound - Lesson Plans - Particles, Echoes, Vibrations, Speed, Solids, Liquids and Gases

These lesson plans have been written to teach the full topic of SOUND to 4th and 5th graders (Y5 and Y6 in the UK). There are also links with SOLIDS, LIQUIDS and GASES particle theory to show how sound travels through materials by vibrations.

The pack includes 5 lesson plans and a skills assessment sheet for both pupils and teachers to use to assess learning at the beginning, ongoing and at the end of the unit.

The lessons contain the following content:

Science Assessment Sheet (Must, Should, Could statements for all elements of Light - where appropriate).

To start the topic, we suggest finding out what the children already know by using the assessment sheet to self assess. At the end of the unit, review the sheet for the children to identify their learning journey. We have used this using two colours, one colour for the beginning of the learning and another colour for the end. Children, parents and teachers can see the progress in learning clearly.

Lesson 1: How does sound travel? (drama) Vibrations, (Investigate) Vibrations.

Lesson 2: Why do we see Lightning before we hear thunder? Speed of travel.

Lesson 3: Why does sound not travel in space? (Vacuums)

Lesson 4: Changing pitch, manipulating sound, creating different sounds

Lesson 5: The faster the vibrations, the higher the pitch, the slower - the lower!
