Description
This highly scaffolded lesson using the Gradual Release Instructional Model teaches students to subtract numbers by Counting Up. This lesson can be taught in several lessons or in one lesson, depending on the pace of your students. Older elementary, (and some younger) are able to subtract using this method. It also works well with Middle School Students who still struggle with subtraction. (Believe me, I teach 7th grade and I use it every year for remediation!)
The lesson begins with showing students the pattern when adding numbers to the next multiple of 10. It also reminds students how to find the multiples of ten. Then the lesson models counting up when finding the difference of two numbers. The students gradually take over the task of counting up, until they can do it entirely on their own.
The last slide gives them a matching task with the draw line tool, so they can practice their digital skills too!
