Description
Use this 4-page newsletter and matching activity as a quick way to present the students with the causes and effects of the First Industrial Revolution in the United States.
This newsletter connects the theme of industrialization with the rise in nationalism following the War of 1812 and the effects of the Embargo Act.
Topics included in the newsletter are: "rugged individualism," Henry Clay's American System, the "rendezvous system," beaver and buffalo trade, Irish and German immigration of the 1840s, NINA, nativist sentiment, Know Nothing Party, Samuel Slater, the invention of the cotton gin, the factory system, interchangeable parts, the sewing machine and its effects on women, the Lowell girls, the "cult of domesticity" and "domestic feminism," the effect of industrialization on the "wage slaves," and Commonwealth v. Hunt.
I usually begin this unit by asking students to read the newsletter, highlighting topics and vocabulary that connect to other units of the early 1800s.
Included is a matching activity to help students move through the newsletter.
