Description
This assignment provides an introduction to both the Land Ordinance of 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. From the reading, students will gain an understanding of the major issues facing the national government after the Revolutionary War: how to pay the nation's debt and how to add additional states to the Union. Students will also gain insight into how the provisions of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 fostered a "competition" over admitting free and slaves states, and how that competition ultimately contributed to the coming of the Civil War.
The assignment also includes a series of questions based on the reading.
In using this in my own class room, students are encouraged to:
1. Number the paragraphs
2. Read the passage
3. Highlight answers in the reading
4. Use complete sentences
The answer key demonstrates these steps.
For those seeking distance learning options, the assignment can easily be converted to a digital activity using Google Slides.
