Description

Students will learn about, or review, Texas as a Republic with this jigsaw or stations activity. It focuses on the presidencies of Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar and has an overview of the road to annexation. They will read 5 passages, fill out graphic organizers, and answer 12 questions. They will then complete a timeline, map, sorting chart, work with point of view involving historically plausible quotes, and more! Teacher information and the answers are included where appropriate.

 The topics covered include:
--a background on the Texas Republic
--Sam Houston's two terms as president
--Mirabeau Lamar's presidency
--an overview of the road to annexation
--debt, Texas Rangers, various capitals, the Cordova Rebellion, the Archive War, the Council House Fight, the Santa Fe Expedition, the Mier Expedition, the Regulator-Moderator War, and MORE!

Sample questions include:
--Why didn’t Houston want the capital moved to Austin? Do you think it was the right choice when everything was said and done? Why or why not?
--Which challenge do you think Houston should have focused most of his energy on during his first term and why? What about his second term and why?
--Was Lamar’s goal of attaining peace with Native Americans through violence achieved? Explain your answer.
--Explain how the Santa Fe Expedition decreased Lamar’s standing as president.
--Discuss at least 3 challenges faced by the Republic, and whether those challenges were countered by a success or remained a challenge until annexation and how/why.
