Description
Perfect activity for School Counselors, Therapists, Health Teachers, Freshmen Academy Teachers, Life Skills Teachers, or any Educator wanting to use CBT to promote healthy thinking patterns in teens. Great for group counseling or classroom discussion on cognitive distortions/thinking errors.
Preparation: print the scenario task cards onto cardstock and cut out. Put them facedown on the table. Print out and laminate “The Name of This Thinking Error Is…” answer board, and cut each one out. Give one to each student along with a dry erase marker and tissue to erase each answer.
Activity: pre-teach the students about thinking errors by using the worksheet to go over the 5 major types that people use. Then begin the activity by having a student draw a card and read it to the group. Each student will write on their answer board what thinking error they hear in the scenario card and will hold it up for everyone to see. They will erase the answer when they move onto the next scenario.
Discussion: have a group discussion about each scenario and the outcomes. Ask students what they learned from this activity.
Reflection: have students fill out the reflection worksheet individually. Discuss their answers.
