Description
My students' favorite activity of the year, even in surveys conducted at the end of the year, students still remember it as their favorite activity even though we play it in August/September and ask to play it again.
A triangle trade simulation game for students highlighting the economic activities that led to the rise of capitalism. Can be used by students of any age and used by a teacher to introduce the economic principles of supply, demand, scarcity, and trade within the historical context of the triangle trade.
The most powerful way I've found to end the simulation is by spending 3 minutes holding up the chains I use to represent the slaves, and making the point that literally 6 of the items being traded in this activity either are directly or were related to the slave trade. It's a powerful reminder that the economic expansion of the 17th century came at a terrible cost.
You will spend between $10-$25 for the physical toys needed to play the game (although you could print pictures for free). Most items are available at the dollar store.
