In this (23 page) activity, your students will compare and contrast the major arguments and perspectives of the hawks and doves during the Vietnam War. How did different groups (i.e. women, celebrities, African Americans, politicians etc.) feel about America’s involvement in the war? What were the varying perspectives? Students will learn more about various American reactions to the war effort by examining a set of 18 short primary source/ secondary source documents/excerpts, photographs, statistics etc. Students will then deepen their understanding by participating in an interactive class discussion (Socratic Seminar) OR you can just have your students complete this as a Document Based Analysis only...
Students will:
1) Be assigned a set of 18 SHORT sources to read thoroughly.
2) Read each source and take notes on the provided notes organizer. Guided essential questions are provided.
3) Examine the Socratic Seminar grading rubric (included) and will prepare themselves to participate in the Socratic Seminar discussion.
4) Complete an EXIT Card: Reflection Activity
All student handouts, primary source documents, grading rubric, Exit card Activity and STEP BY STEP teacher directions are included.
