Description
The WWI Word Sort Activity, is an individual or small group activity that is perfect to use at the beginning of a WWI Unit or lesson to gauge student prior knowledge and/or to pique interest.
Students are given a set of 25 key words, all WWI related, to sort and categorize into 4 main categories (Causes of WWI, Weapons of WWI, Realities of WWI and U.S. Involvement). Working in pairs or small groups (could also be done individually) students discuss the meaning and relationship of each word with their group and then "sort" their list into the correct category. They will do this digitally on Google slides or using a paper/scissors traditional version (both included).
Teachers can easily assess what their students already know about the topics by listening to student discussions during the sorting process! Students can also use their class textbook or the internet link provided to read an online resource about WWI for more information.
