Westward Expansion/ Manifest Destiny Reader's Theater

This resource is a 5-Act, 25-role reader's theater script for westward expansion and Manifest Destiny in American history! Reader's Theater is an engaging instructional strategy for middle grade students that allows them to act out various historical scenes. The acts are as follows:

Act I: Manifest Destiny (Louisiana Purchase/ Lewis and Clark)
Act II: The Native Americans (War of 1812/ Trail of Tears)
Act III: War with Mexico (Mexican-American War)
Act IV: Westward Transportation (Oregon Trail and Railroads)
Act V: The Gold Rush

Each act includes discussion questions. There is a quiz for students at the conclusion of the play, as well as an extension activity in which students will create their own script for the acquisition of the Oregon Territory!
